Garden City vs Ward Melville Lacrosse Game

Two of the top teams on Long Island clashed when Garden City hosted the Patriots from Ward Melville on Sat. It was a tale of two halves, as the Ward Melville offense dictated the pace and was playing "make it take it" by winning the battle at the face off X. in the first half, Ward Melville had 6 different players score, led by John Edmonds with 1 goal and 2 beautiful assists. The first of Brendan Hegarty's three goals would give Ward Melville the 6-3 lead that they would take to the halftime break. If not for a strong half in the net by Garden City goalie, Dan Marino the Trojan deficit could have been much worse. Marino had 9 saves at the break and would have 12 on the day.

Lax beat: First of all, how does feel to be back on Long Island?

JN: It's great to be home. Long Island is the ultimate hotbed for lacrosse. There is no better place to be a lacrosse coach.

LB: What excites you the most about your new head coaching position at Stony Brook?

JN: This is where the best players and the best coaches are. The Long Island community has always loved lacrosse. Now Stony Brook University loves lacrosse. It's a perfect fit.

National Letter of Intent Signing day was a busy one in Massapequa. Six seniors from Coach Radomski Varsity Lacrosse team signed NLIs to play lacrosse in college. Greg Danseglio Interview

Greg Danseglio finished his high school career with back to back CHSAA champions, which is something that very few players from either side of the Chaminade-St. Anthony's rivalry can say. He was also named CHSAA Defenseman of the Year, Under Armour All American and to the US U 19 National Team.

LI Laxbeat decided to catch up with the recent St. Anthony's graduate and current UVA freshman. We wanted to find out what it is like to play fall ball as a freshman for the super talented defending national champion, Virginia Cavaliers.

We hit Greg with a few questions. Check em out:

Laxbeat: Greg, how has the adjustment to college been going so far? Has it been difficult managing classes, practice, team activities, studying and a social life?

GD: The adjustment from high school to college was quite challenging the first few weeks. At first it was difficult managing my time and getting from place to place, because I was unfamiliar with the bus system and where everything is. Every day during fall ball was long as I had multiple classes in the morning followed by practice, tutors and mandatory study hall. In regards to team activities and social life, all of the guys are great and brought me in to the team the moment that I stepped on campus. We always get together on weekends.

Zack Howell Interview

Zach Howell grew up on Long Island in Huntington. He had a tremendous run in both football and lacrosse. Zach graduated as the lacrosse program's all time leader in points. He was an alternate on the Long Island Empire team after his sophomore year and would win the gold medal with the Long Island team at the Empire games following his junior year in high school. Other lacrosse honors included being named the Division II Rookie of the Year as a freshman, all division and all county three times a piece, and Under Armour All American as a senior. His Huntington teams were among the best high school teams ever. The Blue Devils went 63-1 over his last three years and won state championships in 2005 and 2006. Zach was named MVP of the Suffolk County and State Championship games in 2006.

Zach's high school lacrosse career was certainly very impressive, but his football career may have been even better, as he was the Section III MVP in both 2005 and 2006 with Huntinton winning a Long Island championship in 2005. Zach would be named All Long Island and finish up number two on the Long Island all time passing yardage leader board.

Zach would incredibly have as many accolades in college at Duke University. The team made the Final Four in each of Zach's four years at Duke, including winning the national championship in 2010. They also won three ACC championships. Zach's individual honors included being named 3rd team All American, ACC All Tournament Team, NCAA All Tournament Team, USILA Scholar All American, All ACC Academic three times and the ACC Honor Roll. Zach would finish his Duke career as the University's seventh all time goal scorer (135 goals) and eleventh in points (193). He was even better in the playoffs with 25 goals and 31 points which was good for 4th and 5th on Duke's all time books. In the four years that Zach was at Duke, only Stony Brook's Jordan McBride would score more goals. Zach was drafted by the Boston Cannons in the MLL with the 46th pick. He is currently in a training program at HSBC.

Ian Kirby Interview

Ian Kirby-A Massapequa HS 2014, has made a verbal commitment to Towson University. He will be joining his brother, Ryan-Massapequa 2012, in suiting up for Coach Nadelen and the Tigers. The boys will be second generation Tigers as their father, John, was a standout midfielder for Towson in '80 and '81. The whole family is excited to say the least.

Ian has been mainstay on the Long Island Express 2014 Orange team, made the All Star Team at Top 205, attended Jake Reed, made All Tournament at the U15 National Championships, played in the Nassau-Suffolk Rising Sophomore Showcase, and he was recently named to the Inside Lacrosse Top 20 Sophomore List (#16). Other schools that Ian considered were Duke, North Carolina, Johns Hopkins and Hofstra
