Garden City vs Ward Melville Lacrosse Game

Two of the top teams on Long Island clashed when Garden City hosted the Patriots from Ward Melville on Sat. It was a tale of two halves, as the Ward Melville offense dictated the pace and was playing "make it take it" by winning the battle at the face off X. in the first half, Ward Melville had 6 different players score, led by John Edmonds with 1 goal and 2 beautiful assists. The first of Brendan Hegarty's three goals would give Ward Melville the 6-3 lead that they would take to the halftime break. If not for a strong half in the net by Garden City goalie, Dan Marino the Trojan deficit could have been much worse. Marino had 9 saves at the break and would have 12 on the day.

The second half was all Garden City as the Trojan defense tightened up, they were able to win a few face offs at the beginning of the third quarter, and the vaunted GC offense got rolling. The Trojans would score 6 of the first 7 goals in the second half to erase the Ward Melville cushion and take a 12-7 lead. Leading the way for Garden City were Devin Dwyer (4,2), Justin Guterdin (5a), Ryan Norton (3G), and Liam Kennedy (3G). Sophomore Cody George scored a big one on an assist from Guterding and Patric Berkery scored the final goal on a high to high laser from the top right side of the box. Just as it looked like Garden City was about to blow the game wide open, Ward Melville began winning draws again and the Patriots began clawing their way back into the game on consecutive goals from Brendan Hegarty and Jack Bruckner. Ward Melvlle's hopes were buoyed when Garden City received two penalties on the same play, including one on Marino, the net minder who came out of the net and layed a hit on the Ward Melville ball carrier. The hit was after the whistle and Marino got his money's worth. In The goalie's defense, it was a little confusing as the WM midfielder continued going hard to the net after the whistle. The Patriot offense would use the two man advantage to get within 12-9, but that was as close as they would get as GC was able to effectively kill the clock.
